What is a death doula?

Science says: ‘We must live,’ and seeks the means of prolonging, increasing, facilitating, and amplifying life, of making it tolerable and acceptable;

Wisdom says: ‘we must die,’ and seeks how to make us die well.

We at Sojourner Wellness believe that every individual deserves a high quality of life throughout life and unto death. For this reason, we offer End-of-Life Doula services to help you and your loved ones as you prepare for a final transition.

What is the definition of a doula?

The ancient Greek word δούλα (doula) means a “woman who serves.” And although doulas are not gender specific in our modern world, the work of serving remains the same. Doulas provide crucial emotional, physical and spiritual support when families need it most. They provide guidance and perspective during a period of transition to keep you looking forward.

What does a doula do?

  • Doulas provide guidance for caregivers through onsite assessment and advice for safe care of the patient at home.

  • Doulas can help the patient prepare advance directives (i.e., living wills, medical proxy, etc.) and end of life plans (i.e., memorials, obituaries, etc.).

  • Doulas provide patients with companionship and caregivers with respite.

  • Doulas extend bereavement support for loved ones.

  • Many doulas are also licensed massage therapists, Reiki practitioners, clinical aromatherapists, and ordained ministers who can offer emotional, physical and spiritual guidance through transition.

  • Doulas can be booked on an hourly basis or contracted for a period of time.
